Transportation
The Olympic Peninsula is truly a global marketplace. Area water ways are obviously a convenient shipping solution, but not the only fast track to transportation in the area. Clallam County's well-maintained state highways allow truckers to get from Clallam County to any major West Coast markets within two-days. In addition, five airports serve the Olympic Peninsula, rounding out a full array of transportation options for your business or recreational needs.
Land
Trucking is the most popular and effective mode of transporting goods in and out of Clallam County. A variety of local and national trucking companies provide prompt service at competitive prices. Container shipments of wood and other products are common. Typical routes used by the trucking companies from Clallam County are:
- U.S. Highway Route 101 to State Route (SR)-104, then after crossing the Hood Canal Bridge* follow SR-3 and SR-305 to access the Bainbridge Island/Seattle ferry to Seattle, or;
- Follow SR-3 to SR-16 then across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to Tacoma.
* The floating Hood Canal Bridge opens to allow marine vessels to enter and exit Hood Canal. Bridge closures last no longer than 30 minutes at a time. Closures are infrequent and rarely due to extreme weather conditions. Local trucking companies are accustomed to these type of disruptions and can discuss any concerns one may have.

Water
The Port of Port Angeles owns and operates two deep-water terminals with a total capacity of four vessels. The berth accommodates vessels with drafts up to 45 feet. The Port is a regular destination for bulk cargo vessels in route to the Far East markets of Japan, China and Korea. A 300-ton Travel-Lift is also available at the marine terminal. The Port is noted as a prime location for vessel repair and maintenance, due to its convenient location right off a major shipping lane.
Port Angeles is the location of the Puget Sound Pilots. All vessels inbound to other Puget Sound locations must secure a Pilot from the Port Angeles station.

Ferry Service
The Olympic Peninsula, along with the major highway systems, is connected by a network of ferry systems to the metropolitan areas of Puget Sound, as well as Vancouver Island, Canada. Ferries provide convenient and reliable access to the Seattle area with vessels leaving either side of Puget Sound approximately every 45 minutes (crossing time is about 30 minutes) from early morning through late evening every day. Ferry transportation is in high demand, and therefore no ferry route is ever completely out of commission (exception is the privately owned Black Ball passenger and car ferry, which runs between Port Angeles and Victoria, B.C., and closes for two weeks in January).
Barge Capabilities
Regional barge companies provide "on-call" service for transportation of goods from Port Angeles to Puget Sound and Northwest destinations. Regularly scheduled barge service has been explored by the Port and plans are in place to provide barge service should the need arise. The Port has found for small cargo movements, truck hauling can be more cost effective. If a company has specific cargo needs, the Port is ready to assist in finding the most economical transportation method.
