State awards grants to five Innovation Partnership Zones to spur cluster development
Clean tech, renewable energy, global health, wine industries to benefit from regional grants
Olympia, WA — The Washington State Department of Commerce today announced five grants totaling $217,500 to further regional industry cluster growth in the state’s Innovation Partnership Zones (IPZ). All of the projects receiving state funding have matching funds from other sources to leverage the impact of the proposed work.
The five grant recipients are:
· Greater Spokane Incorporated – $75,000 to develop a clean technology gap analysis, skill panel, and structure for university tech transfer to assist in the growth of this sector in Eastern Washington.
· City of Seattle – $55,000 to analyze opportunities and connect Washington-based companies to new markets in the global health sector.
· Walla Walla Community College - $37,500 for an economic impact study on the Walla Walla regional wine cluster to map its growth over the past five years. The study will serve as a basis for an economic development plan for the IPZ and others involved in economic development in the region.
· Clallam County Economic Development Council - $25,000 to begin development of a Strategic Sustainable Energy Roadmap for the North Olympic Peninsula and Grays Harbor Innovation Partnership Zones.
· Technology Alliance Group for Northwest Washington - $25,000 to accelerate technology commercialization and industry-university partnerships through the Technology Development Center serving the Bellingham Innovation Partnership Zone and the Northwest Washington region.
“Innovation has never been more important to Washington’s ability to compete globally for jobs,” said Rogers Weed, Director of Commerce. “Our ability, at the local level through these Innovation Partnership Zones, to commercialize new ideas and build on existing strengths through public-private partnerships will give us the competitive advantage needed to attract and sustain growing companies throughout the state for years to come.”
Washington’s IPZ program was created by the legislature in 2007 and the state currently has 12 zones, each with a unique focus. The purpose of the zones is to develop a framework between private sector, university research, and workforce development to commercialize technologies, further regional innovation, and ultimately create companies and jobs. These grants will allow the zones to move forward their growth plans and enable collaboration with other IPZs throughout the state.
“With this grant approval by the Department of Commerce, we are on our way to establishing the Peninsula region as a leader in renewable energy programs for this part of the country, said Kent Myers, City Manager of Port Angeles, a public partner in the Clallam County Economic Development Council. “The development of a roadmap for this area involving key stakeholders will be a critical initial step in this important economic development opportunity for our communities.”
“McKinstry is pleased to be a partner on the Spokane/Eastern Washington Clean Energy Skills Panel and Gap Analysis with two important IPZ partners, the Spokane and Pullman Innovation Zones,” said Kim Pearman-Gillman, Business Development Director at McKinstry, a provider of consulting, construction, energy, and facility services focused on building energy efficiency and sustainability. “We are thrilled that the joint proposal won the Department of Commerce’s support as we feel that the results achieved can be maximized throughout this area and the rest of the state.”
Release of the grant funds is contingent upon each applicant completing pre-contract requirements such as finalizing other funding sources. All of the projects must be completed by June 30, 2011.
