Mission Statement: “Sequester as much carbon as we can,as fast as we can, at capital efficient scale.”Background: The Myno Carbon Corporation (Myno) is a startup co-founded by Tom Casten and Thor Kallestad. Myno is an integrated biochar and clean power company, based on Bainbridge Island, WA. It has upstream production operations and downstream sales and marketing functions. Myno’s first project will be in Port Angeles, WA.

Long Term Goal: To solve the climate crisis, economic activity in future must continue to provide growth and good jobs. However, that economic activity must become carbon negative, while remaining profitable. With its project in PA, Myno aims to prove these goals are not incompatible. Success in PA leads to rapid growth of the business model elsewhere.

Biochar Basics: Biochar is a stable, solid form of charcoal that sequesters carbon for millennia, making it an ideal technology for scalable carbon removal​.Biochar is produced by pyrolysis (thermal decomposition in the absence of oxygen) of organic mass​Roughly half the carbon in an incoming biomass waste stream is converted to biochar during pyrolysis​In addition to its use in farming and agribusiness, biochar is also an excellent filtration medium for wastewater treatment​Unrelated to these agribusiness opportunities, Myno can also use biochar in asphalt and concrete applications​Every ton of biochar used in the soils can enable drawdown of two to four additional tons of carbon from the atmosphere over 10 years

Production Process: Myno will primarily use forest slash, sawdust, and hog fuel as its feedstock. A total of 190k dry tons of this material will be consumed each year. The pyrolytic processes will convert this feedstock into roughly 40k tons of biochar each year, and about 75k MWh of clean electricity each year.

Timeline: Myno has just begun the process of raising roughly $100 million for this project. The raise is off to a good start. First production (of biochar, and electricity) is planned to occur October 2023.

Jobs, Salary, Training: The Myno facility will generate roughly 50 new jobs in the community of PA. Although salaries have not been set, the pay will be at a level where employees can support a family and get ahead in life. This is a key part of Myno’s long term goal; to sequester enough carbon over the decades ahead and really have an impact on the climate, these facilities need to also produce fulfilling and well paid jobs that help create the momentum for growth we’ll need.

Location: The Myno facility will be in PA. Myno is working through the steps to settle on a final location. We expect to land that detail in the next few weeks.

How PA can help Myno: To reduce the carbon footprint of the project, Myno would like to sell its biochar as close to PA as possible. The biggest thing the community can do to help, is identify uses of biochar, and prospective buyers of the product. Selling the biochar close to PA would be very preferable to shipping it to markets far outside of the community.

You Can Still Apply for Future Rounds of Lifeboat3 Grants – Next Round of Review is in Nov:$5-$20K in grants funded through Clallam County.The Grant Selection Committee is reviewing the applications submitted thus far. Opting out of Long Term Care Insurance Requirements:
Next year the Washington Cares Act goes into effect. Every person that receives a W-2 will be required to pay into the state program which provides limited coverage and can not be used out of the state.
Individuals can obtain their own Long Care Term Care Insurance but they must have it in place by Oct 31, 2021. We know of two companies still offering LTC insurance but both have restrictions.

Get Ready for the Next Round of $25.5 Billion of Provider Relief Fund Distributions:
On September 10, 2021, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), announced $25.5 billion in new funding available for health care providers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic—citing a focus on equity and an effort to support those providers serving the most vulnerable communities and the most need. Organizations can apply for the additional funding in a single application. The portal opens September 29, 2021.

$500 Million Available to Rural Providers: The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) published a Notice on August 12, 2021 announcing $500 million in new Emergency Rural Health Care Grant Program (the “Program”) funding. Eligible organizations can apply through October 12, 2021 for preliminary review. The USDA will accept applications on a continual basis until funds are exhausted. Lifeboat 3 Grant for Clallam County
Lifeboat 3 Application Portal is Open – Next Round of Review scheduled for November.

The Clallam County Commissioners have agreed to begin the process to distribute up to $3 Million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to small businesses that have been the hardest hit and/or unable to receive federal or state funding with priority going to businesses that fall into one of the following categories:

*Small businesses who previously applied and qualified for Working Washington or prior CAREs-funded Lifeboat grants that did not receive funding;
*Nonprofits (and potentially small businesses) who provide child care services;
*Small businesses who qualified for 2nd PPP rounds of funding due to incurring a 25% reduction in revenues but did not receive a 2nd PPP loan;
*Startup small businesses who commenced operations in 2019 or 2020 in Clallam County or changed their business type in 2019 or 2020;
*Fishing guides that did not qualify for any state or federal assistance programs during the pandemic;
*Event Planners & Festival Operators that did not qualify SVOG or other state assistance programs;
*Restaurants who applied for a Restaurant Revitalization Fund but did not receive any funding;
*Businesses that transported passengers who tested positive for COVID-19 for transport to the hospital, that incurred significant unreimbursed COVID mitigation related costs);
*Businesses that can make the case that their unique situation of revenue loss (relative to other businesses in the county) warrants grant funding.

This chart shows why the housing market may see an end-of-September shock:

Fortune Magazine reports that “since bottoming out this spring, the number of homes for sale is up 30%.
Sure, some of that can be attributed to seasonality, but the bigger reason 
is buyers are finally balking at insane prices—which have risen 18% over the past 12 months.

Another factor: Edgy sellers who don’t want to miss out on profits may be rushing to put their homes on the market—and may feel a bit more comfortable moving now than they did when the pandemic was raging unchecked.

But this softening isn’t over: There’s more inventory looming.

The mortgage forbearance program, which allows some borrowers to pause their payments, is set to begin winding down on Sept. 30.

There are still 1.7 million borrowers enrolled in the program. Not all of these struggling borrowers are going to be able to afford those payments. Some of them will simply sell rather than restart paying. That of course, means more inventory.

Emergency Broadband Benefits
The upcoming Emergency Broadband Benefit will provide a discount of up to $50 per month towards broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on Tribal lands.

Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if they contribute $10-$50 toward the purchase price.
Who Is Eligible for the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program?

A household is eligible if one member of the household meets one of the criteria below:

1. Receives benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision, or did so in the 2019-2020 school year;
2. Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year;
3. Experienced a substantial loss of income since February 29, 2020 and the household had a total income in 2020 below $99,000 for single filers and $198,000 for joint filers;
4. Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating providers’ existing low-income or COVID-19 program.
